Description

A pencil sketch, part of a world building exercise I am working on.

This species evolved in a freefall environment, similar in principle to that of Larry Nivens' book 'The Integral Trees'. Their wings, unlike those of planetary life don't need to provide lift, and are used in a propeller blade action, flexing to provide thrust and moving up and down in opposing directions to balance the body. Long pointed tail-fins provide steering and stability.

The creature is a silk producer, and from its abdomen it can produce long strands to either spin prey catching webs, weave ropes, or build habitats to shelter and breed in. The 'upper' and 'lower' arms carry a band of eyes and small dextrous tentacles, and the 'side' arms have reduced eyes and large silk glands, producing finer and more precise stands and sheets for building and prey immobilization.

Breathing is carried out through paired pores in between wing segments.

This individual is on a persistence hunt, slowly wearing down prey by following it at distance and not allowing it rest. When it gets closer it will secure its spear with a silk rope and hurl it to skewer its victim, then return to the pod [tribe] to share the food around. Though they have invented zero gravity cooking with a kind of suspended oven, they can eat meat raw and tear it apart with hundreds of teeth on the inner surface of their arms.
